Help make next year’s Tour longer

The first race of its kind was brought to Yorkshire in May this year and was held over three days. Welcome to Yorkshire now believe the county can build on this year’s success and expand the event into a four day event.

A Welcome to Yorkshire spokesperson said: “A four day Tour will mean we can bring the race to more parts of Yorkshire, and showcase more of our amazing county to the world.

“This year’s Tour de Yorkshire was a huge success - 1.5 million spectators came to see the race, six million television viewers watched around the world and over 6,000 people took part in the public sportive ride.”

This year’s race saw Bridlington host the start of Stage One with the cyclists then passing through Pickering, Dalby, Whitby and Robin Hood’s Bay before finishing in Scarborough.

Stage Two saw the cyclists travel 174km from Selby to York passing through Wetwang and Beverley and the final day from Wakefield to Leeds.

Dates for the race will be confirmed by the UCI in Autumn 2015 and organisers Welcome to Yorkshire and ASO have confirmed they will apply for the same weekend of racing, the first weekend of May, for the 2016 edition.
