Cancer cash bid by Sam, 13

A young boy from Thwing has decided to raise money for Cancer Research UK after losing three close relatives to the disease in just five years.

Sam Oxtoby, 13, has taken it upon himself to try and raise as much money as possible for the charity.

He said: “By the time I die, I would really like the powers that be to have found a cure for cancer.

“Over the last five years, I have lost three very close family members to the terrible disease and thought that I should try and help the charity in some way”

Sam, with the help of his parents and many family friends, will be organising a Sunday Fun Day at the Falling Stone public house on main Street in Thwing on Sunday 24 August.The event starts at 2pm and runs to 7pm.

Attractions include a cake stall, a bring and buy stall, a raffle with a first prize of £100 cash donated by the Thwing and Octon Amenity Fund, a tombola, a darts and pool tournament and many smaller side stalls.

Sam’s mother, Jane, said that both she and his father Chris were very proud of Sam as the fund raising has all been his own idea. he had decided upon the attractions and the format of the day.

The pub will be open for food and drink during the afternoon and licensees have agreed to give Sam a donation to his funds after the day has finished.
