The topsy turvy weather, which seems to fluctuate from autumnal to summery in a heartbeat, is set to continue into the weekend when it will be breezy and slightly cooler than the average for June.

The Met Office said today’s possible thunderstorms would be in the morning and could move up the county from South Yorkshire and up the Yorkshire coast.

Some parts of Yorkshire are expected to miss the downpours and thunder altogether.

The afternoon will see the weather brightening up but there could be some light drizzle in the evening.

Friday is expected to be a “fairly nice day for most of Yorkshire, “ the Met Office said.

Saturday and Sunday will be a little cooler, with a maximum of around 17C in Yorkshire - just below the June average.

In the South, the weather is expected to be warmer than the North over the coming days.

The mercury is set to hit 26C in the South East, beating this year’s record high of 25.6C in Faversham, Kent, on April 15.

But the warm temperature will come after thunderstorms and heavy showers are expected to hit, prompting the Met Office to put out yellow weather warnings for rain in London and south-east England, the East of England, East Midlands and in some parts of Yorkshire.

The weekend is only expected to see highs of about 21C, dashing hopes of a heatwave.

Met Office forecaster Daniel Panton-King said once the showers clear today there will be “plenty of sunshine”.

The majority of England and Wales will have a “nice, fine day” on Saturday but northern England and up into Scotland will see some wind and “blustery showers”.

The forecaster said the weekend will see a “north-south split” as the weather will be similar on Sunday.

The South will see a temperature of high teens or possibly 21C in the South East, while northern England will have highs of 17C and western Scotland could be as low as 13C.

Mr Panton-King said that while it is not a heatwave there is still plenty of nice weather around.
