HOTELIERS Bob and Carole Hillery celebrated their Golden Anniversary in style with a trip round the Caribbean.

The couple renewed their 50-year-old wedding vows onboard the giant cruise liner Ventura and celebrated their special anniversary on February 4 under sunny skies hundreds of miles from Bridlington.

The couple, who met as teenagers on a blind date in Bingley, married in the town’s Holy Trinity Church in 1961.

They moved to Bridlington nine-years-later when they took on the Spinnaker House Hotel on Pembroke Terrace.

They are now semi-retired from the business, with Carole working in the kitchen part-time and Bob still ‘unable to keep away from the place’ according to Carole, who added that she and her husband have remained ‘best friends’ despite living and working together for decades.

She said: “I think the secret to a long happy marriage is to always air your views.

“If that means having a row, then have a row!

“But never go to bed not speaking.”

The Hillerys are very active in the Bridlington community, with Carole being a previous chairwoman of the Bridlington in Bloom Association and Bob a former chairman of the town’s Hotel and Guest House Association.

More recently they have been vocal in their opposition to the new Pembroke Gardens development and spoke out about the effect the building work has had on the surrounding guest houses, including their own.

Carole, 69 and Bob, 70, have three daughters who live in Bridlington and a son who lives in Cumbria.

They also have 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Carole and Bob thanked all the well-wishers who sent them presents and cards to celebrate their anniversary.
