Bad weather forced organisers to postpone Sewerby Gala for the first time in 30 years.
One of the most popular annual family fun days on the yorkshire Coast, the event is Sewerby Cricket Club’s biggest annual fund-raisers and proceeds cover its running costs.
Officials were devastated after a year of work organising the gala was wiped out by heavy rain on Sunday morning.
President Ken Saul said:“We just couldn’t get it up and running. A few of the fairground rides and food stalls were set up and we let people walk around for free.
“We did everything we could, and pleaded with people to stay around, but health and safety is a big factor and it was very windy on the clifftops.
“It’s the first time in 30 years we’ve had to cancel.
“Occasionally, we have been slow to get started or had the odd shower but it has never been a washout.”
He said the club would have to look at how it could make the money it had lost out on by having to cancel the gala.
“It was disappointing but we’ve had some wonderful texts and messages of support from strangers,” added Mr Saul.
