Volunteers needed to join beach clean and help Yorkshire Wildlife Trust collect data on local litter

The scheme, called Waves of Waste, will be operating in Flamborough and Bridlington in May and June with other clean-up operations taking place in Filey and Scarborough.

With the help of volunteers, during each beach clean YWT’s co-ordinators will record the litter collected before feeding the details into a national database created by the Marine Conservation Society.

The information will then be used to determine specific litter trends in the Bridlington and Flamborough areas.

The YWT is hoping residents will join its teams during the project and do their bit to help tackle the problem while protecting marine wildlife.

The beach cleans are held:

○ Flamborough, Sunday, May 2 – 1pm to 3pm

○ North Bridlington, Saturday, May 15 – 10:30am to 12:30pm

○ North Bridlington, Saturday, June 12 – 10:30am to 12:30pm

A spokesman said: “Let’s show how much we have missed our beaches by giving them a little love when we return this year with a clean.

“Thanks to David Attenborough’s Blue Planet II TV series, awareness of the horrors of plastic polluting our seas has never been higher.

“We can all play our part by looking after the places that we visit and cleaning up after ourselves but there are also countryside and beach litter picking initiatives that need the help of volunteers.”
