A MEMBER of the public dialled 999 after coming across a woman in the street crying and screaming for help.
She said she had been assaulted by her partner, Bridlington magistrates were told.
Prosecuting at last Wednesday’s hearing, Jayne Wilson said Eleanor Hampson and her partner of two years, Jason Carl Fletcher, 35, of Hilderthorpe Road, Bridlington, had both been drinking during the day on November 8 last year when an argument had taken place in their flat.
Fletcher appeared in court for sentencing having pleaded guilty to a charge of common assault. His case had been set for trial on February 15 when the complainant Miss Hampson had attended. A charge of criminal damage, which Fletcher had denied, was accepted and was withdrawn by the prosecution.
Mrs Wilson said he had used reasonable force to defend himself and had slapped her only once across the face causing bruising.
She said the pair were currently in the process of being reconciled.
Giving Fletcher a 12-month conditional discharge with £85 court costs to pay, magistrate Robin Sunley said: “There are exceptional circumstances, although this is a matter of domestic violence you are now reconciled as a couple.”
