Couple die within hours of each other

A COUPLE who met at a dance at the Spa have died within hours of each other.

Jean Helen Rodgers died suddenly at home on Tuesday, January 18. Her husband, Norman, died suddenly in hospital the following day. They were 76 and 81-years-old respectively.

Jean was born in Beeford and grew up in Thornholme with her three brothers and two sisters. She attended school in Burton Agnes and went on to St George’s School in Bridlington. After leaving school she worked as a housemaid/companion.

Norman was born in Beverley and grew up in Leconfield. He was the eldest of four children. After leaving school he became a farm worker, where he developed a love of the land and heavy horses.

The couple met at a dance at the Spa in the 1950s and were married in St Martin’s Church, Burton Agnes, in 1957.

They started married life in a caravan at Millingdale where Norman worked as a farm labourer before moving to Harpham. In 1962 the couple moved to Sunderlandwick following the death of Norman’s father.

Norman and Jean were both dedicated parents and grandparents. They were also both keen cyclists and had an active social life.
