Chippy is now ‘cool’

TOP Bridlington chippy Fish and Chips at 149 has been at it again.

It has just picked up two more accolades to add to its collection.

The Marton Road chippy, which has already been voted the best in the country this year, is also now officially “cool” at least according to Esquire Magazine which has voted the shop as one of its top five best traditional chip shops in the country.

Editor Alex Bilmes said: “For the last 150 years the national dish of Britain, fish and chips, has been undergoing a transformation, whether open or wrapped or elegantly served by a Michelin-starred chef.

“The nation’s favourite dish has now become unapologetically cool.”

Fish and Chips at 149 was joined in the top five by chippies in Tyne and Wear, Suffolk, Fife and Guernsey.

It has also been crowned a national winner in the prestigious annual National Apprenticeship Awards 2011

Fish and Chips at 149 scooped the top prize of Airbus Award for Small Employer of the Year and owners Tracy Poskitt and Matthew Silk collected the award at a ceremony at The Mermaid Conference and Events Centre in London with other winners from across the country.

Half of the shop’s ten-strong workforce are on apprenticeships and for Tracy and Matthew, the benefits are obvious.

Tracy said: “The business would not have reached the top without Apprenticeships and the training we have put in place.

“The best reward for us, as employers, is when our apprentices are asked where they work they don’t say down the local chippy, and are proud to say they work at Fish and Chips at 149.”
