THE Katie Walker Cancer Trust’s fifth annual Charity Gala Dinner is due to take place at Bridlington Spa on Saturday, December 17.

Each year the trust holds the gala dinner to raise money which helps towards funding international research meetings and helping families in the Yorkshire area with teenagers that are going through treatment for cancer.

The dinner is one of the biggest fund-raisers for the trust – which was set up in memory of Bridlington woman Katie Walker, who died of cancer aged 20 in 2007. It is run by her parents, Julie and Micky Walker.

The event tends to raise around £2,500 every year, but this year Mr and Mrs Walker are hoping it can raise its best ever total of £3,500.

It all begins with a sparkling wine reception followed by a three-course meal, and this year the event features entertainment from comedian Craig Anthony and fantastic cabaret group The Retro-Fits.

Also on the evening there is a great charity raffle and silent auction and the event is a great way to celebrate Christmas.

This year the trust is asking businesses and individuals to buy tickets – and businesses can sponsor a table seating 10 people for £395. Individual tickets cost £39.50.

Julie Walker said: “The international consensus meetings have really taken shape, the trust funding a meeting in December, bringing in top specialists from around the world.

“With these meetings we are aiming to improve the outcome of teenagers and young adults with cancer – which was one of Katie’s final wishes.

“We have had a paper issued in the top Oncology Review Magazine and hope to have our second paper issued after this meeting.

“Meetings have taken place in America and London over the last four years and progress is being made all the time.

“The meetings that they fund are not just held over a two-day period then forgotten about until the next meeting, work is taking place and conference calls with all the specialists take place on a regular basis.”

Tickets for the event are available from the Spa box office on 678258.

Mr and Mrs Walker would be very grateful to any businesses or individuals who would like to donate prizes for the silent auction or the raffle, or funds to buy prizes.
