Shoppers in Bridlington will be helping to raise money for the town’s lifeboat after the Promenades centre announced the RNLI will be its chosen charity of 2017.

The public were invited to make suggestions for which good cause should benefit from fund-raising events held in the precinct

More than 170 people put forward the names of 15 different local charities and the centre management team had the tough job of whittling them down and picking an overall winner.

Maria Kamper, centre manager, said the lifeboat was a unanimous winner

She said: “We are extremely pleased and excited to announce RLNI Bridlington as our partner charity for 2017.

“We are all really looking forward to starting this new partnership and I am confident our customers will get behind this cause and we hope to raise enough to make a real difference to the charity.”

Around 40 people put the charity’s name forward and Bob Taylor, chairman of fund-raising at Bridlington Lifeboat Station, said: “We are thrilled that RNLI Bridlington has been selected as The Promenades Shopping Centre’s charity partner and it is even more fantastic that the public were key in the decision making.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to raise the profile of the local RNLI services and promote staying safe at sea.”

Last year, The Promenades Shopping Centre raised £18,762 for charities across the UK.
