As part of the Big Deal project a group of Headlands School students took the opportunity to go to York University.
My group ‘Point Blank’ came up with the idea of an item of jewellery, for example, a bracelet, that was stylish and fitted with a torch and an alarm, as a basic beginning.
We then had to draw up ideas for and prototype using the things we had such as coloured pens, felt, glue and pipe cleaners.
We also had to “manage money” with this project.
After that all teams were scheduled lunch, to meet their mentors and come up with some long-term ideas for our main project.
Unfortunately our school’s mentors couldn’t make it, but we sat with some York University students and staff and ran through our ideas with them.
The ideas we have come up with so far are the aforementioned bracelet and our favourite, a portable drinks dispenser, designed to stop spillages and make things easier for children’s parties. We are also to keep in contact with our mentors over the time period set for the project.
If we make it to the final, we will be up against three other teams, and pitching our ideas to the dragons, from Dragons Den. The final prize is a trip to New York, which we are all hoping for. However the Big Deal in itself is a great thing to be a part of.
