PEOPLE in the Bridlington area are being given free food and advice to help them look after wilds birds in their gardens this winter.
The RSPB has designated October 29 as national Feed The Birds Day and staff and volunteers from the Bempton RSPB reserve will be at Eastfield Garden Centre during that weekend, handing out information packs and leaflets to highlight the importance of feeding wild birds to help them to survive the cold winter months.
To help knock the message home the garden centre is giving away 100 bags of six fat balls on a first come, first served basis, during the weekend of October 29 and 30.
Carole Hebden, of Eastfield Garden Centre, said: “We gave away some free packs of wild bird seed and fat balls last year to encourage people to feed garden birds.
“They went really quickly, which shows that people are more than willing to do their bit to help the wild birds that visit their gardens.
“Each year we are seeing an increase in sales of wild bird food so it’s evident that the message is getting through that tasty treats like fat balls and seed mixes can provide the birds with the energy they need to survive the cold.
“We are delighted our fat balls suppliers, Tom Chambers, are supporting us in this event.”
