“FISH and chips 61 times please - we are getting married!”
That was the order from Jan Bolton and her new husband Gavin Smithies, who wanted a proper Bridlington seaside theme wedding complete with mouthwatering fish and chips and their own ice cream van.
After their wedding on Saturday at St John the Evangelist Church in Sewerby, their wedding reception overlooking the sea at Bridlington Links Golf Club was their dream come true.
Bridlington’s award-winning Fish And Chips At 149 in Marton Road – voted the UK’s top chippy – served up 60 or so portions of their fish and chips to a delighted bride and groom and their guests.
Owners Matthew Silk and Tracey Poskitt shut the shop for half an hour to take the piping hot portions of fish and chips to the wedding reception.
Matthew and staff member Cori completed the wedding picture by wearing tuxedos to serve up.
When it came to pudding, Wally’s Ices rolled up with their ice cream van for guests to go and help themselves to whatever they wanted.
“We really fancied a wedding on the beach with donkeys and ice cream but there was so much red tape involved we thought this would be the next best thing,” said a delighted Jan. “It was fantastic, we didn’t want the day to end. We didn’t even notice when there was a downpour, it was just great.”
The reception turned into an evening party for around 100 guests before the newly-weds left for an overnight stop in a Bridlington hotel – this time it was strawberries, champagne and chocolates.
Jan, 50, a former auxilliary nurse at Bridlington Hospital, and Gavin, 51, a Yorkshire Ambulance Service paramdeic, have lived together at their home in Windermere Drive, Bridlington, for the past eight years.
The couple will start their honeymoon later this month when they leave for a trip to New Zealand for a holiday and to be at the wedding of Gavin’s eldest son Adam, 24 who lives in Christchurch on South Island.
“It is winter with four inches of snow there at the moment, and you can’t get fish and chips as good as we have here, but it will be a fantastic trip and we are really looking forward to their wedding,” said Jan.
She and Gavin each have two children by previous marriages. Gavin’s other son, Jack, 16 who still lives at home, was best man at their wedding.
Jan’s daughter Vicky, 26, was their maid of honour. She also has a son Richard, 28, who lives in Bridlington.
