East Riding of Yorkshire Council is advising motorists to take care and allow for extra time to make journeys tonight, with forecasters anticipating widespread rain across the area followed by freezing temperatures that could result in icy conditions.

The council’s 21-vehicle gritter fleet is on standby at depots around the East Riding to treat the network, as required, but with the potential for conditions to change rapidly, the council is also reminding motorists to drive carefully.

Mike Featherby, interim head of streetscene services, said: “The council has put operational measures in place to treat the network tonight, as required, but it is always important that motorists drive to the conditions.

“We anticipate we will salt the main network tonight as road temperatures are expected to fall below zero, but with rain forecast as well there could be the potential for black ice.

“We strongly advise that motorists take care driving and make only essential journeys, where possible.”
