There are many ways in which YOURhealth can help you achieve a better state of wellbeing – and together they are known as social prescribing.

Some of these are courses of personal support and advice, led by a Health Trainer, running for a set period of time and working toward a particular goal.

It might be losing weight, stopping smoking or drug use, taking more exercise, cutting down on alcohol, improving your diet or reducing stress and anxiety: whatever your aim a Health Trainer will work with you to develop a plan that’s right for you.

Health trainers have a wide range of expertise and experience, they are recruited from the local community and their service is free.

YOURhealth can also call upon a team of mental wellbeing coaches, able to help with issues such as low mood, depression, panic attacks, loss and grief, sleeping problems, chronic pain and Covid 19 recovery.

“Social prescribing covers any non-medical way of helping people achieve better health and wellbeing,” said senior health trainer Yvonne Bill.

“It can be through one of the programmes led by our health trainers, which offer support for a specific time, but in many cases the most appropriate solution comes through referring someone to other services and organisations that offer counselling, housing or financial advice.”.

“We’ll sit down, have a chat, listen to your needs and then make sure you access the right help for you.”

Community groups are a crucial part of YOURhealth’s social prescribing, especially for people dealing with loneliness, isolation or the many issues prompted by more than a year of lockdowns, restrictions on social contact and other issues caused by the pandemic such as reduced income and home schooling.

The service can connect you to a range of grips from befriending services, food banks, the Men in Sheds movement, local churches and many more. As well as being referred to these groups to receive help and support there is also the opportunity to volunteer with them, helping provide a focus and a sense of self-worth: crucial elements in creating and enhancing wellbeing.

Because it sits at the heart of the community, both physically with the Bridlington hub and personally through the local knowledge and contacts of its team, YOURhealth is ideally placed to reach out to as many people as possible.

Some approach it directly by walking through the door at 19 Quay Road (though this, of course, has been off the agenda for some time and remains so for the moment) while many more are referred to it by other service providers, be they official organisations or voluntary groups.

Read the case studies to find out how YOURhealth is connected to other organisations and how an initial contact with one of them can identify other issues YOURhealth may be able to help with.
