The Health and Wellbeing column with Mel Spencer: People can still keep fit at home if they are not ready to venture out to the gym

Home training is still a strong option for those who are not ready to go to the gyms yet.

As Lockdown restrictions are finally being eased and with an increasing number of public places being reopened with social distancing rules applied, I really feel like we should give ourselves a big pat on the back.

For the majority of us who stuck with the rulings it’s been a tough four months, but we’ve done it.

Now coming out of the other side can feel almost as daunting!

Certainly from a health and fitness perspective, for those of us desperate to get back into some form of routine exercising the reopening of gyms is a godsend – but what if you’re not ready to head back into them just yet? You may be in an at risk group or purely not ready for the gym environment.

Home training is still a strong viable option.

If I’ve learnt nothing else over the last four months, I’ve learnt that you can progress your levels of fitness with very little equipment – namely resistance bands.

You can do pretty much everything that you can with weights, it’s just knowing how to use them.

They are inexpensive, take up hardly any space and because you’re not lugging heavy weights around, risk of injury is massively reduced too.

Those are some of the advantages of resistance band training, let’s have a look at some of the benefits of training at home:

Convenience would be up there as one of the biggest benefits. Taking 45 minutes out of your day is exactly that. No need to include travelling time on either side of it and no prep time to speak of – no shower bag to pack, yours is waiting for you when you finish. Childcare is another biggie. No minders required and it’s a massive positive for your children to see you exercising – you are their role models after all.

The comfort of your own home. You have privacy, you are on your territory, no unfamiliar surroundings to contend with. If your head is happy when training, your body will be too.

Your own bubble. In the world we currently inhabit, this is at the forefront of all of our minds.

The world has changed and we need to adapt to it.

Taking all of the above into consideration I have launched Firefly Fitness.

We bring fitness, nutrition and wellbeing coaching directly to you in your home.

Our coaches are fully qualified and will tailor programmes specifically to you and your individual needs.

Basically, we do the leg work (at least some of it!), so you don’t have to!
