Scarborough artist Sally Gatie’s exhibition The White Room comprises four large-scale canvases which together form a meditative ‘room’.

They depict figures sleeping peacefully amongst the chaos of pattern in the fabrics which surround them.

The White Room can be seen at the Gallery at Woodend in Scarborough from Saturday February 8 to Friday February 28.

Sally creates the canvases, the largest of which are more than 12ft by 6ft, by meticulously assembling photomontages of the fabric and figure, then scaling them up using a grid system and painting them in oils on linen.

Her photomontages and preparatory works will be on show alongside the paintings at the gallery at Woodend, and in Hull, at the nearby Eleven Gallery.

She said: “There’s something about wonderfully executed large-scale paintings that demand you stop and look, that you don’t just pass them by with a glance.

“I’ve been working towards this exhibition for over two years, and it was in my mind for many years before that. I feel tremendously privileged to have the opportunity to present these canvases.”

An unusual feature of the exhibitions will be a series of free meditation workshops run by Sally and by representatives of the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University, where she learned her meditation technique.

Woodend is open weekdays from 9am to 5pm, plus Saturdays February 8 and 15 and Sunday February 16 from 10am to 4pm, and at the Hull School of Art and Design from Saturday March 8 to Sunday April 6 from 10am to 5pm Monday to Friday.
