Scarborough's Stephen Joseph Theatre unveils its September cinema programme - includes 40th anniversary screening of remastered The Empire Strikes Back

Dazzling West End musicals and new and classic British films are on the big screen at Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre throughout September.

The theatre re-opened its Art Deco cinema at the end of August, with a comprehensive programme of measures for the safety and comfort of cinema patrons, including limited capacities and aisle access for every pair of seats booked.

The venue has been awarded the VisitEngland ‘We’re Good to Go’ industry standard mark, signifying that it adheres to government and public health guidance.

West End Musical Season – Kinky Boots (captured live): Charlie has inherited a failing shoe factory and goes into partnership with drag queen Lola to save the business.

Thursday September 3 at 7pm

Summerland: In this new British film written and directed by Jessica Swale, a reclusive writer who has lived in a small Kent town for years and is regarded by the locals as a witch is portrayed in her youth in the 1940s by Gemma Arterton and later by Scarborough-born Penelope Wilton. Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Tom Courtenay also star.

Friday September 4 at 7pm, Saturday September 5 at 2pm and 7pm, Tuesday September 8 and Wednesday September 9 at 7pm, Thursday September 10 at 2pm.

West End Musical Season – The King & I (captured live): the Tony Award-winning Lincoln Center Theater production, filmed at the London Palladium in 2018, tells the story of Anna, hired by the King of Siam to serve as an English teacher in his palace in an attempt to modernize his country.

Hope Gap: Annette Benning and Bill Nighy play a couple whose world is torn apart when he decides to leave her after 29 years of marriage. Hope Gap also stars Steven Pacey, who played Bertie Wooster in By Jeeves, the first show at the Stephen Joseph when it moved into the former Odeon cinema in 1996.

The Empire Strikes Back: Considered by many to be the finest of all the Star Wars films, The Empire Strikes Back celebrates its 40th anniversary with this remastered edition.

Andre Rieu’s Magical Maastricht: Together in Music (captured live): Celebrating 15 years of glorious hometown concerts, the King Of Waltz will bring the joyous atmosphere of his iconic open-air concerts in Maastricht to the big screen.

I Know Where I’m Going (film, in conjunction with the WEA, but open to all): released in 1945, Powell and Pressburger’s I Know Where I’m Going has gained a cult following over the years. The film follows the emancipated Joan Webster (Wendy Hiller) trying to get to a remote Hebridean island for her wedding, and meeting naval officer Torquil MacNeil (Roger Livesey) on the way. In remastered HD.

Saturday September 19 at 2pm and 7pm – the evening screening has an introduction from WEA Film Studies tutor George Cromack

The Lighthouse: Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson turn in barnstorming performances as lighthouse keepers struggling to keep their sanity in this black-and-white movie.

Misbehaviour: A starry cast including Keira Knightley, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Jessie Buckley, Keeley Hawes, Phyllis Logan, Lesley Manville, Rhys Ifans and Greg Kinnear in this comedy drama about the 1970 Miss World competition, which saw the first black winner of the title - Jennifer Hosten, Miss Grenada.

Matthew Bourne’s The Red Shoes (captured live): Matthew Bourne’s triumphant adaptation of the legendary film returns, having won two Olivier Awards and dazzled audiences across the UK and the USA.The Red Shoes is a tale of obsession, possession and one girl's dream to be the greatest dancer in the world.
