The cinema at the town-centre theatre is presenting Fright Fest by the Sea, a mini film festival of movies ranging from comedy classic Carry On Screaming through family favourite animation The Addams Family to the terrifying The Village of the Damned, An American Werewolf in London and The Shining.

Fright Fest by the Sea will also feature Halloween-themed meals, cocktails and mocktails at Eat Me @ The SJT, the home of Scarborough’s award-winning Eat Me café on the theatre’s first floor.

The theatre re-opened the doors of its cinema in August and has introduced a comprehensive programme of measures for the safety and comfort of cinema patrons, including limited capacities and aisle access for every pair of seats booked.

The theatre has been awarded the VisitEngland ‘We’re Good to Go’ industry standard mark, signifying that it adheres to government and public health guidance.

Fright Fest by the Sea movies are:

The Village of the Damned (1960)

Named by Bravo TV as having one of its 100 Scariest Movie Moments, and referenced on The Simpsons, cinema-goers queued around the block to see this classic adaptation of the John Wyndham novel The Midwich Cuckoos on its release. Sixty years after its first release, the movie still grips audiences.

Friday October 23 at 2pm, Saturday 24 October at 7pm

An American Werewolf in London (1981)

There’s a bad moon rising in John Landis’s 1981 classic as American students David (David Naughton) and Jack (Griffin Dunne) get lost backpacking across the Yorkshire moors. They stumble across an inn full of unwelcoming locals (including the late Brian Glover and Rik Mayall, both in fine form) – you’d think its name might give them a clue. It’s called The Slaughtered Lamb…

The Shining (1980)

Stanley Kubrick’s visually haunting chiller, based on Stephen King’s bestselling novel, is a contemporary classic. Newsweek called The Shining ‘the first epic horror film’, and Jack Nicholson’s portrayal of the unhinged, or perhaps possessed, Jack Torrance, is a masterpiece of scenery-chewing. On the 40th anniversary of its release, this extended cut is 24 minutes longer than the film available in the UK for the past three decades.

Friday October 30 and Saturday October 31 at 7pm

Cinema tickets at the Stephen Joseph for films are £7 (concessions £6; Circle members/NHS/under-30s £5); for event cinema including ‘captured live’, £12; for live streamings, £17.

To book, please visit the website: sjt.uk.com/whatson or call the box office on 01723 370541 - open Tuesdays to Saturdays, 11am to 4pm, for both phone calls and in-person bookings.
