For generations, a trip to the seaside has been a real family favourite.

And though Bridlington has seen modern developments in recent years, it remains a traditional sort of resort.

Buckets and spades, fish and chips, sand and sea and all the things you would expect with a day at the beach.

Although Hornsea and Withernsea, further down the coast, also have award-winning beaches, Bridlington remains the East Riding’s biggest and most popular seaside town.

A day in Bridlington was suggested for our Top 40 list by the town’s mayor Coun Shelagh Finlay.

She said: “A day at the seaside in Bridlington what treats are in store for you?

“A choice of two beautiful beaches with miles of golden sands to sit on and admire the blue sea whilst making a sand castle.

“Donkey rides for the little ones or a paddle in the warm sea.

“Plenty of places to sit out and watch the world go by as you eat an ice cream.

“Sit onthe pier with fish and chips and watch the boats come and go while marvelling at our rich shell fishing heritage.

“A ride on one of our boats will allow you to see the wonderful cliffs and take in the beauty of Bridlington.

“Back on land a chance to visit the fun fair or a walk around the pretty town in search of souvenirs to remind you of the wonderful time you had at Bridlington.”

Of course, a day on the beach, making sandcastles, is absolutely free, and there is nowehere better when the sun is shining.

And you have to feel sorry for the people in landlocked counties of the UK, when we have a wonderful coast on our doorstep.

The resort still has a host of family-run guest houses and bed and breakfasts, which act as a reminder of its heyday.

Stroll along the promenades, have a paddle in the sea, wander around the harbour and enjoy the seaside tasty treats - it is a timeless favourite.
