THERE will be no celebrity guest switching on Bridlington's Christmas lights this year.
Bridlington Mayor Coun Cyril Marsburg will turn on the lights on Sunday, November 29 – an honour that has fallen to celebrities such as the Cheeky Girls, Chico and Journey South in recent years.

It is hoped that a variety of local entertainers will take part in the event, which will see Manor Street closed off and a stage set up in King Street.

School choirs are also expected to sing Christmas carols in the Promenades Shopping Centre during the afternoon.

A town council spokesman said they wanted to involve the local community in the switch-on ceremony rather than spending thousands of pounds on a celebrity, which then has a negative effect on the council's budget for the following year.

To celebrate the event, the council has also launched a Christmas card competition involving pupils from all Bridlington schools – the winner will see their design used as the town council's official card.

The competition is open to youngsters aged between five and 16 and entries can be sent to the town council office at 62 Quay Road before the November 13 closing date. Coun Marsburg will choose the winning design ahead of the lights switch-on ceremony.

Good! The thousands of pounds spent on these minor celebs can go on something more worthwhile! (Hopefully)

We have a Mayor, and plenty of children / people who have talents in the town - isn't that what it should be about?
