Town find form against Stocksbridge
Bridlington Town 2 Stocksbridge Park Steels 1
AFTER falling to a defeat at Barton Town last Wednesday night, Bridlington Town bounced back in style on Saturday when they defeated Stocksbridge Park Steels of the Evo-stick League Premier Division in an evenly contested game.
At Barton, the Seasiders conceded two penalties that were converted by Ryan Morton in the 12th and 30th minutes, then fell further behind to Dave Gordon's strike on 37 minutes to trail 3-0 at the interval.
Goals from Ali Benson (55), Tom Fleming (63) and Craig Hogg (80) levelled the scores but two minutes before the end Richard Metcalf scored the winner for Barton.
On Saturday, Town got off to a good start when Phil Harrison latched on to a ball into the box, on six minutes, before swivelling to fire home.
Both sides gave a good account of themselves and halfway through the half Stocksbridge twice went close.
Carl Giblin fouled Jack Muldoon five yards outside of the penalty area and the free kick from Alex Callery was well saved by Mark Wilberforce with Ash Allanson completing the clearance.
Hogg made a superb run on the edge of the visitor's penalty area and went past several defenders before releasing the ball to Harrison whose shot was parried by goalkeeper Adam Ogden and when it looked as if Town would increase their lead the referee, Mr Wade, gave a drop ball as a player lay on the ball.
Both sides made changes on the restart with Town introducing defender Lee Wright who has been released by Hull City. Before he had time to settle, however, Stocksbridge replacement Mark Ward met a cross from the right to volley home in the first minute of the half.
Ward was again to the fore when he played Muldoon through but Wilberforce was quick and came out to save down at the striker's feet.
With Stocksbridge starting to get the upper hand, Wright showed his prowess with a timely tackle on Muldoon after Allanson had made a sloppy pass in midfield.
On 76 minutes, Craig Hogg sealed the game for the hosts with a peach of a goal. He collected a Stocksbridge clearance just inside the visitors' half and with Burdick returning from an offside position, Hogg ghosted past a defender to leave himself clear 25 yards out.
Ogden came out to close him down but the ex-Scarborough Athletic man struck the ball sweetly past the goalkeeper into the corner of the net.
Buoyed by the second goal Bridlington finished the game on a high and matched their opponents blow for blow.
