Signs of improvement
York Senior Division Two
Scarborough189/4
SewerbyDNB
Sewerby took to the road this week looking for a much needed boost to their confidence, Scarborough were this week’s challenge.
Another toss won Sewerby to bowl, better things were needed from the bowling side of things. Andrew Rennoldson and Rob Coates opened up to good effect with four maidens from the eight overs, the only problem was no wickets were forthcoming. After 13 overs a double change came with Shaun Acton bowling the rest of the innings unchanged and Ben Dobson slicing in from the other end. Shaun was particularily unlucky having maintained a sumptuous line all through, and Ben ruffling a few feathers at the other end with two good wickets to add to his burgeoning total. Scarborough had wickets in hand so finally decided to hit out and at tea they had amassed a more than useful 189 for 4 with Sam Parkin (63) and Joe Kendle (58) being the main men for Scarborough.
After a lengthy tea interval the sky closed in and the match was abandoned to the rain, an unhappy end to the day, but overall the bowling and fielding responded well to the skipper’s rallying call and obvious signs of improvement are arriving, so let’s keep on the upward curve.

Sewerby8/0
On a frustrating rain affected day Sewerby 2nds were unable to complete a game in which they appeared to be in total control.
Thornton Dale’s innings had been reduced to 41 overs by an initial shower, however when the rain came again just after tea the visitors were more than willing to seek the sanctuary of the changing rooms after being bowled out for 109.
It had all started so well for the young Sewerby side with the ever alert Clarke removing the dangerous Hill with a sharp catch at short leg off the bowling of Atkin.
Thomassen then held on to a running catch from the same bowler.
With Staveley on the mark at the other end the visitors were only 18 for 2 off 10 overs.
With usual first change bowler Blythe away it fell to left hander Staveley to complete a longer than usual stint.
It proved a task he warmed to eventually finishing with 5 for 32 as he chipped away at Dale's middle order. An accurate spell from Rusbridge-Burns continued to hold the visitors in check, the wet conditions caused the fielders to spill several chances in this and Atkin's second spell
With the introduction of Newby Sewerby pulled things back round with 3 for 28 and despite a good knock from Hunt, Dale were all out for 109. As the teams left the field the rain was falling and despite man handling the covers on and off several times the rain finally won the day with Sewerby only managing to bat for 3 overs and reaching 8 without loss.
To make matters worse better weather to the North of Scarborough meant 3rd placed Cayton were able to complete a 20 point win and move themselves above Sewerby in the league.
Sewerby 10pts Thornton Dale 6 pts.

Sewerby Academy171
Nafferton106/5
On a cloudy evening at the Cliff Top Ground Sewerby Academy entertained Nafferton in the Hospital Cup. Sewerby Captain Andrew Rennoldson lost the toss but amazingly still found his side batting first.
Sewerby got of to a strong start with Acton caressing the ball to all areas of the park and young Lewis Beasley supporting. Although Nafferton bowled some decent line and length at the Sewerby outfit, the opening stand of 79 before the breakthrough spoke for itself. The loss of opening batsman Beasley saw the run rate slow a little for a few overs but Acton once again found his feet and demolished the bowling attack in style until eventually falling looking to add to the 24 runs he had made in four balls. Pearson, Robinson and Coates also contributed well to an excellent total of 171 – a brilliant all-round batting performance.
Sewerby came out to bowl on a high and looked to rip through the Nafferton batting line up but this task proved harder than first thought. Although Atkin grabbed the early wicket of Woodmansey, Tate provided resistance and looked to bat positively before falling to some clever bowling by Rennoldson. Atkin went on to claim a further wicket and finished with figures of 2 for 27. Robinson, Newby, Purvis and Coates all put in some decent overs restricting Nafferton to 106 for 5.
This was a brilliant performance from Sewerby Academy, with everybody having some form of input to the victory. Hopefully the same form can be shown on a weekend and in weeks to come.
