Shocking display from Flamborough 2nds

Independent Division One

Flamborough 2nds75

Brandesburton76/1

Poor toss to lose, poor wicket, poor batting performance and a poor bowling and fielding performance summed up Boro’s afternoon at table-toppers Brandesburton.

Although Brandesburton won at a canter and the scoreline is comprehensive enough it still wasn’t all that easy and shouldn’t have been that easy.

It is easy however, for Boro to make excuses but 9 of their 10 wickets to fall went to catches. Boro, in comparison, after tea dropped 4 important catches early on, which might have made a big difference had they held on to at least a couple of them.

In between interruptions for rain, which did nothing to help the condition of the green, underprepared Brandesburton track, Will Traves top scored with 25 for the visitors while Danny Ezard’s gentle enough seamers brought him 8 for 20.

After another break for rain not long after the tea interval the usually fluent Sharp fell to John Trowhill for an agricultural 11. Kevin Atkinson and Lee Rodmell initially found it tough going but after having their 9 lives, they decided to hit their way out of trouble. It worked and whereas the Boro batters found fielders 9 times out of 10, these two found most gaps in the field to finally end the visitors misery in the 16th over.

All in all it was an afternoon to forget for Boro.

Evening Division Three

Flamborough Acad’135/4

Flamborough 2nds138/2

The Battle of Flamborough Head Part One was won by the senior side last Thursday in an entertaining run-fest at the Woodcock Memorial Playing Field.

2nds skipper Graeme Harvey won the toss and asked the Academy side to bat first. They made 135 for 4 in their 20 overs. Ben Traves and John Major made 12 and 15 respectively early doors but it was Dave Sellars and Tom Marshall who gave the innings its impetus with 45 and 46 not out respectively.

Both batsmen batted beautifully nudging the good balls for ones and twos and putting the bad balls away for boundaries.

Having said that there were only 6 fours and 3 sixes in the whole of the innings, which shows just how good the running between the wickets was.

In reply 2nds got off to just as good a start, keeping up with the required run rate. Andy Dixon was the first to go for 18, well caught by Marshall off the bowling of Harry Burton with the score on 40. Simon Leeson joined Craig Readhead and these two put on another 40 before Readhead holed out to Rob Traves off the bowling of Marshall for a well constructed 33. With 56 still needed off 8 overs another couple of wickets might have changed the game completely but Leeson (55 not out) got into his stride and took a liking to the bowling of Sam Waines while Harvey (23 not out) got stuck into the bowling of Sellars. In the end the Academy score was comfortably passed with 3.3 overs to spare.

The second part of the 2009 2nds versus Academy trilogy, the semi-final of the Division 3 cup, took place on Tuesday.

The report of this match will be in next week’s Free Press.

Hospital Cup

Flamborough 2nds169/1

Beeford85/2

Boro 2nds were in fine form comprehensively trouncing Beeford by 84 runs in the Hospital cup last Tuesday.

Andy Dixon (65 not out), Craig Readhead (46) and Simon Leeson (33 not out) made the runs compiled in just 18 overs. None of the Beeford bowlers got away lightly, with only Dave Young managing to grab the solitary wicket.

In reply the Beeford batters didn’t seem particularly interested and eventually saw out their overs making 85 for 2.

Ayre made 56 not out and Harrison 22 not out. All the Boro attack bowled well. Mike Emmerson was the pick taking 2 for 20 off his 6 overs.

Boro are now at home to either Burton Agnes or Middleton in the quarter final next week.
