Rudd's efforts are in vain
BRIDLINGTON went down to high flying league-leaders York 2nd at Dukes Park, despite a fine effort from Casey Rudd who batted with great determination, making a superb 64 and also picking up a couple of wickets when York were struggling to get the necessary runs.
The visitors won the toss and invited Bridlington to have a bat. Brid started steadily against excellent bowling from Matt Hodson and Johnny Moxon.
Steve Garton was bowled by a great delivery from Moxon for seven, but Nick Tennant and Rudd batted solidly until Tennant went for 11.
Scott Cooper and Rudd took the score on to 67 before double disaster struck, Cooper going caught for 10 and Rich Lount being lbw next ball.
Ian Shipley and Rudd were looking good when Shipley was also caught for 10 and two more wickets fell quickly to put Brid in real trouble, one of which was the vital wicket of Rudd for a superb 64.
Barry Rudd replaced his son at the wicket and never looked in any trouble at all as he and Joe Edmundson added useful runs, before Edmundson was brilliantly caught at slip for 14.
James Cobb soon followed as Brid were all out for a disappointing 145.
York started steadily after the tea interval, but fine bowling from the Edmundson brothers had them in a spot of bother as three wickets fell quickly, Joe picking up two and Sam one.
Casey Rudd then had Richard Love lbw for eight, and Sam Edmundson caught and bowled Flack to leave York on 77/5 - game on.
A couple of half-chances went begging as York went on to close in on victory, Andy Kay playing the match winning innings off 59 not out, well supported by Mike Mortimer, 21.
Although beaten, Bridlington battled all the way to the line and with a bit of luck it could have been a much closer call.
Bridlington have some hard matches in the next three weeks so a big effort will be needed to help remain in a comfortable position in the league.
