Rain puts an end to run chase

York Senior Division One

Driffield226/6

Bridlington 8/0

HEAVY rain ended the game at Dukes Park just after the tea interval when Bridlington had just started their innings chasing a Driffield total of 226/6.

Bridlington had won the toss and put Driffield in to bat and after the early loss of Mick Drury for seven, Mark Clarkson, Chris Chapman and Will Norman all batted well for Driffield to put up a formidable total.

Bridlington finally began their reply after a longish interval but the rain returned with Bridlington eight without loss to bring proceedings to an early close.

Both captains were keen to continue but the weather had the last word.

Beckett League Division A

Snainton182

Bridlington 2nd105/8

BRIDLINGTON made the trip to newly promoted Snainton on Saturday where the home team batted first and got off to a flyer with Eyer and Oakley hitting the ball to all parts with a shot a ball.

When old war horse Andy Brown and young Philip Elliott came into the attack wickets began to fall, Brown capturing three and Elliott four. Ten overs were lost to rain encouraging the home batsmen to hit out even more. Ryan Nicholls held three good catches at long off to bring the Snainton innings to a close on 182.

With more rain during tea 20 minutes were lost and the once good wicket became difficult as Bridlington started their reply.

They lost wickets at regular intervals slumping to 80/6 before more rain.

With two minutes left before play would be abandoned for the day the umpires took to the field and Snainton quickly took two more wickets.

With Bridlington on the brink of defeat, rain saved the day as the game was abandoned.

Simon Brooke top scored for Bridlington with 31. They closed on 105 for the loss of eight wickets.

Snainton 13 points, Bridlington 11 points.

BRIDLINGTON travelled to Helmsley on Saturday for a game which ultimately was ruined by the weather.

Batting first, Bridlington made a positive start with a first wicket stand between Mike Cawkill and David Watson of 47, with Cawkill first out for 22.

Duncombe Park only managed 11 overs before rain ended the game with them reaching 67/1.

Scarborough Hospital Cup

Pickering95/8

Bridlington 96/4

BRIDLINGTON went into the semi final stages of the Scarborough Hospital Cup with a fine win at Pickering, seeing the trophy favourites off by six wickets!

Pickering batted first but soon ran into trouble against excellent bowling from Will Hall and Casey Rudd who broke the back of the innings sending the first five batsmen back for 26. A good innings from skipper Colin Frank pulled things round for the home team but useful spells from Tom McMeeken and Sam Edmundson restricted them to 95 /8 at the end of the overs, Frank finishing on 36 not out.

Rudd’s figures of 4-20 puts him pole position for the bowling award, they are the best figures so far in this year’s competition.

Bridlington suffered an early setback when Richard Lount was caught first ball for a duck but a good partnership by Rudd and Nick Tennant pulled things round and Sam Edmundson kept things going with a quick 25 before Simon Brooke and Ian Shipley saw Bridlington home with a couple of overs to spare.

Bridlington now take on Staxton in the semi final and the game will be played at Flixton on Tuesday July 7, 6.30pm.

Evening League Division One

Sewerby107/8

Bridlington 111/0

BRIDLINGTON had a comfortable win against Sewerby Academy at Dukes Park. Sewerby batted first but fine bowling from Tom McMeeken and Casey Rudd kept the scoring rate down. Ian Pearson top scored with 32 and four others got into double figures but 107 on a good wicket was barely enough.

Bridlington started fairly slowly but Rudd and Richard Lount timed it perfectly as they gradually gained momentum and they ran out comfortable winners with both batsmen making unbeaten half centuries for a 10 wicket victory.

Friendly

York Wanderers236/8

Bridlington212/5

BRIDLINGTON went down to York Wanderers by 24 runs in a highly entertaining friendly played in glorious sunshine on Sunday.

Bridlington started well with young Josh Dawson putting in a good spell and claiming four wickets. Beal made a solid 46 but Steve Janney picked up a wicket and 14 year old Sam Jones got his first wickets in senior cricket as Wanderers were in a spot of bother. A fine partnership between skipper John Rounthwaite and Stuart Cass, 48 not out and 61 respectively saw them finish on a useful total of 236.

Good batting from Casey Rudd 42, Josh Mainprize 71 not out, and Richard Lount who made 53 before retiring saw Bridlington make a decent attempt, and Dawson made a brisk 20 not out in the last three overs to give Bridlington respectability in a thoroughly enjoyable game played in good spirit.
