Trio progress towards finals

THREE of Bridlington boxing club’s youngsters entered the Schoolboy Championships at the weekend.

Kier Herrgesell entered in the under 46kg category where there was only one other entry in Yorkshire and he will box in a final on January 28.

He has a very tough opponent in Pierce Gudgeon from Steel City Boxing Club in Sheffield.

Gudgeon has been Yorkshire champion previously and even went to Wales with the Yorkshire squad last season.

However Herrgesell will be no pushover and it could prove to be a close contest.

Aaron Boyes entered in the under 50kg category where there were initially seven entries in Yorkshire.

One pulled out before the draw leaving six. Boyes had to box a quarter final on Saturday where he faced Jimmy-Joe Flint from Doncaster Plant ABC.

Boyes was by far the more experienced boxer but Flint was no easy target and both boxers worked well.

Throughout the last round Boyes’ experience and fitness came into effect and Flint began to struggle.

Boyes won on a unanimous decision and will now face Joe Jenkins from Hillsborough Boxing Club in Sheffield on Friday in the semi final.

If he wins there he will join Herrgesell next weekend in the Yorkshire finals.

Zac Stabler entered in the under 70kg category where there were three Yorkshire entries.

The draw couldn’t have been any tougher as he had to box last year’s national champion, Connor Tommins from St Paul’s Boxing Academy in Hull.

Tommins had at least five inches in height advantage against Stabler but that didn’t worry the Bridlington boxer.

Stabler piled on the pressure keeping close to Tommins for most of the bout.

In the last round Tommins really began to tire under the workload and Stabler stepped up the pressure even more.

It was a close bout but one the judges awarded to Stabler. He will now box Zac Lazenby from Kingston ABC in Hull in the Yorkshire final.

Bridlington head coach Damien Grant said: “The two lads that boxed performed really well and if Aaron wins this Friday, which he is more than capable of, then it will be nice to have three Yorkshire finalists.”
