YOUNGSTERS from three Bridlington primary schools teamed up to take second place in the British Modern Triathlon championships in Birmingham

Taylor Green, Lewis Hebden and Harvey Roberts all secured top 10 finishes in the individual standings, but their combined efforts propelled them to the runners-up spot in the team event.

The trio, all aged 10 and part of the Yorkshire Pentathlon Club, had earned their right to be at the national finals by qualifying through the county championships which were held in York.

Only the top six qualified from the Yorkshire region for the national finals so the competition tough, but having got through the regional stage, they excelled at the national event.

In Birmingham, Roberts and Hebden had fantastic all round performances on the day, with Hebden gaining a new PB in both his swim (10th) and run (ninth), along with a solid shoot which saw him rise from 10th to eighth in the final standings.

Roberts was Mr Consistent and had both a good swim (eighth) and run (seventh) but a fantastic in personal best in the shoot saw him jump from eighth up to fifth in the final standings.

Green had solid performances in the swim (third) and heat winner in the run (fifth overall between all the heats) but a nervy shoot which saw him drop from third in the overall standings to ninth

Hebden is a pupil at Martongate School and Green goes to Hilderthorpe Primary and both are members of Bridlington Swimming Club.

Roberts swims for Driffield and is a pupil at Burlington Junior School, and the three have developed a close friendship and rivalry during competitions.

The regional finals in York had been the first modern triathlon for all three.

The stand out performance on that day came from Hebden who finished a lofty third place with Roberts and Green coming fourth and fifth.

Having qualified as individuals in their own right the trio was then thrown together to compete not only as individuals but as a team at Birmingham

Along the way all three worked extremely hard in an effort to improve their all-round performances attending regular shooting, running and swimming training sessions, along with their individual competitions.

Roberts competed in Bridlington schools cross country event finishing first and he was third in the Bridlington Half Marathon fun run.

Hebden competed in a warm up triathlon were he gained new personal bests and came second along with winning best shoot for his age. He also did a charity swim, raising money for the Yorkshire Cancer Research.

Green had a busy month in the build-up to the finals, winning a warm up triathlon event, and achieving best swim for his age.

He also took part in multiple swim events which included South Axholme Sharks’ Hallowe’en sprint meet where he won races in fly, freestyle, and backstroke and was awarded the top boy trophy, before claiming a silver and bronze in the East Riding Championships.
