Soldier set to step back into the ring

A SOLDIER is preparing to step into the ring for the first time in almost a decade, ahead of Bridlington Amateur Boxing Club’s next show.

Ben Cunningham will return to his home town for a super-middleweight bout against Hull’s Sam Knight at the Spa on November 2.

He has spent the past few years coaching colleagues from the 3rd Parachute Regiment, rather than competing himself.

“In between two tours to Afghanistan, in 2008 and 2011, I spent a lot of my time in the UK coaching. Every time 3Para has entered the Army Major Unit Competition in the last 10 years, we have won it, but now I have decided I want to get back into the ring myself.

“I started boxing at Bridlington Boys Club when I was about 10, and carried on training when I was joining the Army. Whenever I’ve had leave, I have tried to pop down to the club and I am really looking forward to boxing in Bridlington again.

“The last time I boxed competitively was probably for the Bridlington club about 10 years ago.”

This time he will be representing his regiment, and he is planning a warm-up bout at a charity show in London next Friday.

Cunningham had 36 contests for the Bridlington club as a youngster and recorded 27 wins. He also boxed Amir Khan as an amateur.
