YORKSHIRE enjoy nothing better than beating old rivals Lancashire, and it was a Bridlington lad who led his side to victory in a Battle of the Roses clash last week.
Lloyd Wheeldon captained Yorkshire B’s under 15s against their Red Rose rivals at York, scoring a try as his team won 34-27.
Things were looking grim as Yorkshire went 15-0 behind, and found themselves 22-10 down at half time.
But Bridlington School pupil Wheeldon rallied his troops from scrum half and they made a spirited second-half comeback.
He took the armband in only his second appearance for the county, having made his debut against Cardiff Boys.
The 15-year-old started out with the junior section at Bridlington RUFC, before moving to Driffield. He now plays for Hull Ionians, and has represented East Yorkshire at younger age groups.
