Bridlington 1sts enjoyed a fantastic win over North Bradford 1sts in Yorkshire League Division Two on Sunday.

It was all the more impressive considering that captain Paul Robinson didn’t have a fourth man to play at 5.30pm on Saturday as Fox, Torbett and Whittington were all injured and Shaun Fell was playing in a university match. Leo Yong was taken from the second team at the last minute to fill the gap.

Seventeen-year-old Alex Verda played brilliantly to win his men’s singles 21-16 21-11 but Helen Brice was well beaten by Sam Jessop 21-13 21-15.

Nigel Fell and Robinson were on fire in this match. They may be 51 and 47 years of age, but they are still a very hard pair to beat.

They won their first match 21-12 21-15 and their second match 21-16 21-10.

Robinson’s power and speed around the court was evident in both matches and Fell’s net play and solid defence was inspirational.

Verda and Yong played in the closest match of the Day losing 22-24 21-16 22-20. Yong rose to the occasion and Verda was brilliant in this match. The duo then lost to Bradford’s first pair 21-16 21-10.

Brid were given three ladies matches as Bradford only had three ladies available. Brice and Elliott-Hobson played well winning 21-12 16-21 21-15. Elliott-Hobson was very good at the back of the court while Brice controlled the front. In another doubles game, Manson and Robinson lost 21-6 21-14.

Robinson and Brice won the match for Bridlington with a 21-16 21-17 win. Robinson’s smash was his major weapon in this match, while Brice played some lovely cross court net shots in the match.

Fell and Elliott-Hobson didn’t play as well as they can and lost 21-10 21-16, while Verda and Manson won the first set of the third mixed 21-12 but lost the next 15-21 15-21.

Captain Robinson paid tribute to a great team performance. He said: “We needed this victory. It was lovely to see Alex Verda play so well, I hope he can play more matches for us.

“Leo Yong played his heart out for us and played well in the match. We have been hit really badly by injuries and I really hope we can get a couple of players back for the next match in three weeks against Hull.”

Bridlington’s second team lost to Horsforth B 7-2.

Justine Beadnall and Jane Mitchell won the first ladies in three sets and Mitchell and W Good won in two sets in the other ladies doubles. Good and Beadnall lost in three sets, going down 24-22 in the last set.

N Howard and H Sysor played well but lost in three sets in the first mens. Bridlington lost all the other matches even though some matches did go to 3 sets.

Jamie Smith made his debut for Brid, coming in for Leo Yong and he played well.

In the afternoon match, Bridlington 2nds lost 8-1 to a strong C lifton B outfit. H Sysor and W Good picking up the only win in two sets in the mixed, playing really well.

Beadnall and Atkinson lost in three sets and went down in the last set 21-16. N Howard and H Sysor lost 25-23 21-16 in the top men’s match.

Dave Bruce played in the afternoon and deserves great credit for filling in. He did find it tough, with the standard far better than he is used to, but he is a proper team man who gave his all.
