The thoughts of Bridlington RUFC coach Rich Girking after the 56-0 defeat at Ilkley.
Ilkley are a well organised side who are pushing for the title and have players in a number of positions who can control the game. Hopefully we are safe, so we got a bit complacent.
We weren’t great against Heath and carried that on here. We didn’t play badly in the first 20 minutes but conceded two sloppy tries which we could’ve done better with.
It was 22-0 at half time and if we hadn’t conceded those two tries, we might have still been in with a shout, but you can’t give teams like Ilkley easy points.
The scrums went OK but we didn’t win many lineouts but at times in the first half, we defended well, although when we had the ball, we gave it straight back and that sapped our energy.
The last 20 minutes was not what I expect from a Bridlington team. It was very below-par and we got tired and didn’t put the effort in. We let ourselves down.
Bridlington teams don’t fold like that and it was upsetting to see. Some of the lads gave up.
Hopefully. the lads realise that and will put it right against Selby this weekend.
They are a good outfit too and if we give the ball away like we did at Ilkley, they will punish us too. We need to pull our finger out and mentally, we need to be stronger.
I would give a special mention to Matty Faulkner, who played his first game for the first team and came on for the last 20 minutes in the back row.
Another under 17s player Callum Sanderson came on and did well too and we need to set a better example to these lads.
