BRIDLINGTON RUFC’s director of rugby Rich Girking has praised the club’s first team for their convincing win against Pontefract last weekend.

The side beat their West Yorkshire opponents 46-10 in the first league game of the season, and didn’t fall for the visitors’, what Girking has called “intimidating tactics” which led to tempers flaring early on and players from each side being sent off.

Girking said: “It was a great start to the season last weekend against Pontefract. We beat a team whose tactics were crude to say the least, trying to intimidate at all times.

“Unfortunately twice in the first 20 minutes, due to cheap shots off the ball we retaliated and two of ours and one of theirs were given their marching orders.

“But this seemed to spur us on, and our forwards performed manfully, supplying plenty of ball for our exciting backs to run in seven tries.

“Our defence was excellent, only allowing them one try late in the game, despite Pontefract playing for one hour with an extra man.

“There were good performances from Paddy and newcomer Ezra Luxton in the forwards and Stevie Mellonby in the backs, although everyone put in a mammoth stint.

“Huge thanks to the ladies who sponsored the day and made the night a good one to say the least.

“Next week sees us at York which will be a huge game as they will be smarting after a loss against Barnsley last week.

“Adam Dixon, Mike Ridsdale and Danny Palmer will be back in the running for a start after being away last week.”

Girking was keen to congratulate the seconds on their 55-5 win over Pontefract also.

He continued: “I must congratulate the second team, who won by 50 points which is fantastic. Well done Manty and Tom.”
