Martongate Primary School’s Under 11 Boys Hockey team travelled to St Olaves School in York last week representing Humberside in the North East of England round of the National Mini Hockey Championships.

Eight teams from the North East of England competed in two leagues. Martongate’s first match was against the host school.

Martongate dominated the opening few minutes but were unable to convert their chances, until eventually Brandon Nalton found the back of the net after a very well-worked team goal.

They then took to the field against Ashville College, from Harrogate. This was a very tense match against a team who matched Martongate in every area.

While Jack Green and Harry Pearson came close to scoring in attack, the defence of Declan Potts, Jed Oyston and Frankie Gascoigne held together well.

After a very hard end to end contested match the final result was a 0-0 draw.

The third and final game of the pool was against Richmond School, of Durham. Lewis Hebden and Ryan Galloway led this game with their determination and level of effort however neither side could capitalise on their attacks, resulting in another 0-0 draw.

At the end of the pool matches, Martongate missed out on winning a place outright in the next competition by one goal so had to face the play offs.

Scarborough College stood between the team and the North of England Finals.

Although Martongate dominated most of the play-off match, they failed to convert their chances in attack but excellent goalkeeping by Riley Jemmison and Rebekah Pratley in defence made sure that Scarborough did not score either.

After extra time the score was still 0-0. Penalty strokes were then going to decide which team would progress through to the next round.

Jemmison came into his own, remaining calm and confident in goal saving every stoke taken by Scarborough. Jack Green and Frankie Gascoigne showed great composure converting their strokes enabling the Martongate team to book their place in the North of England Finals

For the sixth year in succession Martongate Primary Schools Under 11 Boys Hockey have qualified for North of England finals, the top competition for this age group.

So far in the competition after 11 matches they remain unbeaten, scoring 12 goals and only conceding one.

The North of England finals are to be played today at Weetwood playing fields at Leeds University
