BRIDLINGTON Golf Club hosted the 17th annual Seaside Pro/Am Golf event on June 1.

Despite heavy rainfall the day before, organisers breathed a huge sigh of relief that the event went unaffected by the recent unpredictable weather and all the competitors enjoyed the pleasant weather conditions.

The day proved hugely successful and confirmed its reputation as the largest event of its kind in the North of England.

Everybody thoroughly enjoyed the day and the quality of the golf played was first class with some fine performances from both the professional and amateur golfers.

Event organiser Anthony Howarth told the Free Press “The event was once again a resounding success and it was such a big relief that the weather didn’t play havoc and in fact the conditions on the day were ideal.

“The event is the highlight in the Yorkshire professional golfers’ calendar and has also become an important sporting event for Bridlington.

“The event’s association with local accountancy firm Lloyd Dowson is one of the main reasons why the event has become so popular over the years and their support over the past 10 years has been incredible and I would like to take this opportunity to thank David Dowson and everyone at Lloyd Dowson for their continued support”.

In total 48 professionals from all over the north of England graced the fairways at Bridlington Golf Club and 144 amateurs joined them to make up the four-man teams.

The Bridlington Free Press Trophy and a cheque for £1,500, presented to the leading Professional was won by James Drinkall (Allerthorpe Park Golf Club) who returned a very impressive score of 68 (four under par) to narrowly beat the ever-present Adrian Ambler (Low Laithes GC), a former winner of the event in 2007 who shot 69.

At the prize presentation Drinkall was very complimentary about the quality of the Belvedere-based course and also paid tribute to how well the event was run.

Local success in the professional event came from Bridlington Golf Club veteran golf professionals Anthony Howarth and Steve Raybould who both managed very steady scores of 72 (level par) to finish in the prizes.

The keenly contested Lloyd Dowson Team Trophy was won by a local team representing Pineapple Joes with a score of 126 (18 under par).

The local Bridlington based embroidery company have played in every event over the past 17 years and company director Dean Thompson was thrilled to have finally got his hands on the trophy.

In his acceptance speech he complimented the quality of the course and he dedicated the victory to John Medforth (chairman of greens) who sadly passed away recently.

Dean was joined by his brother Darren and Paul Hayes and their professional was Richard Pace from One Stop Golf.

Pineapple Joes won the title from second placed Team Grange Farm Fruits by the narrowest of margins of one shot.

All the fantastic prizes up for grabs throughout the day were presented to the winners at the end of day prize presentation by club captain Mike Wilkinson and David Dowson representing the main sponsors Lloyd Dowson Chartered Accountants.

During the prizegiving many people were thanked for helping make the day such a huge success.

Those thanked included the officials from the Yorkshire PGA, the catering and bar staff at Bridlington Golf Club and also the many members who helped and generously offered their services throughout the day.

Head greenkeeper Shaun Drum and his team were particularly praised for the immaculate condition of the course.

Following the prize presentation David Dowson had the pleasant duty of presenting the charity cheque to this year’s nominated charity.

Kids N Cancer was chosen to benefit from this year’s event and during the day £1,500 was raised. Mike Hymen, CEO of the charity was on hand to receive the cheque and he introduced local youngster Bradley Marshall who had benefitted last year from this worthwhile cause when he went to the USA for Proton radiation treatment.

Mike thanked everyone involved in raising such an incredible amount.

David Dowson from Lloyd Dowson Accountants officially brought the day to a close by thanking everyone for their support and a special mention to the event organiser Anthony Howarth for all his hard work in organising the event.

He also announced, to the delight of the organisers, that Lloyd Dowson Accountants would continue as main sponsors for the 2013 event which will take place on Friday, June 7.
