Martongate’s gymnastics squad competed in the Yorkshire Team Floor and Vault Championships in Hull against many other schools from around Yorkshire.
Competing in the girls team were Rachel Pearson, Savannah Kilburn, Jess Robson, Lizzie Blackford and Millie Rowbottom.
They performed brilliantly showing good strength, flexibility and balance and finished in a creditable sixth place.
It was the first time competing for most of the Mixed B team of Toby Gee, Daniel Rhodes, Henry Chapman, Sian Beswick, Connie Melles and Sophie Armstrong.
The girls vaulted well and the boys showed strength and maturity in their floor routines resulting in good scores for the team.
They finished in fourth place only 0.49 behind a medal position.
Mixed A team gymnasts were Bailey Smithson, Shane Tyers, Grace Howarth, Elisha Walbyoff and Lily Voase. Their performances on both floor and vault were superb with Voase’s floor score being the highest out of the whole competition.
The other team members’ individual floor scores beat all the competing teams in their category. The Mixed A team won the competition retaining their Yorkshire Champion title and gained a place to represent Yorkshire in the British Championships in Stoke.
The mixed team competed against other regional champions many are private schools and academies at the British Championships. The standard was very high with Martongate raising their standards to perform some excellent vaults and fantastic floor routines finishing in sixth place.
Thanks go to coaches Jo Ward, Ann Voase and Sarah Pugh for their endless commitment to gymnastics and the school.
The squad also thanked the Friends of Martongate who very kindly donated money to purchase new equipment and uniform for the gymnasts.
