LOCAL anglers walked away with a lareg chunk of the £25,000 prize money at the European Open Beach Championships.

The overall winner was Stuart Voase of Hornsea with a final total of 4885g, landed on Sunday.

Runner-up Ben Ray of Bridlington was also empty-handed on Saturday but finished with an aggregate score of 3680g after a successful second day.

Even though the competition attracted hundreds of anglers, some from as far afield as Poland and Germany, half of the top 10 in the seniors competition were from the East Riding.

Bridlington’s Liz Hill took third in the ladies’ competition, which was won by Tracey Riley from Burton Pidsea.

Ken McCoy and Steve Graham took the honours in the pairs event with a combined weight of 6765, with top prize in the team event going to Pat Would, Simon Gilbert, Andrew Proudfoot and Elliott Heather, with 13,400g.

Sunderland’s Chris Hossack landed Saturday’s biggest catch, a 5lb 6oz cod, with Voase’s 10lb 12oz cod was the biggest on Sunday and enough to give him the overall title.
