National Under 11 Boys Mini Hockey Championships
MARTONGATE Primary School’s Under 11 Boys hockey team travelled to St Olaves School, York on Friday, March 9, representing Humberside in the North East of England round of the National Mini Hockey Championships.
Eight teams from the North East of England competed in two leagues.
Martongate’s first match was against Tranmoor Primary School, from South Yorkshire. Martongate dominated the opening few minutes but were unable to convert their chances.
Eventually Joe Rowbottom found the back of the net which seemed to calm the team’s nerves.
Harrison Male then added another with a superb strike to secure the match.
They then took to the field against Malsis School, from Skipton in North Yorkshire.
This was a very tense match against a team who matched Martongate in every area.
The defence of Joe Kynman, Cameron Nalton and Oliver Manson held together well.
Midway through the match Kynman was injured due to a careless tackle and the team had to reorganise the structure of the team for the rest of the match.
Martongate came very close to stealing a victory towards the end but the final result was a 0-0 draw.
The third and final game of the pool was against St Michaels’s RC Primary School, Durham.
Thomas Thornton in goal made some fantastic reaction saves while Ashley Melles at the other end came close to scoring. It was a keenly contested match in which neither side could capitalise on their attacks, resulting in another 0-0 draw.
At the end of the pool matches Martongate and Malsis School were equal on points and goal difference.
The pool winner was then decided by penalty flicks after the first round the score was 2-2 so the dreaded sudden death rules then came in to force.
Malsis School eventually came out as winners. This meant Martongate found them selves in the play off stages for places in the North of England finals.
Nafferton School were the opponents for this match and the team were ready and up for it, not wanting the opportunity to play in the next round slip by them.
Male scored from a fine strike from the edge of the D.
This settled the team and after some lovely team work Sam Flowerdew converted a second goal to book the team a place in the finals.
For the third year in succession Martongate Primary Schools Under 11 Boys Hockey have qualified for North of England finals, the top competition for this age group.
The team should be extremely proud of themselves, they have worked well as a team together and can now go and enjoy the finals in the knowledge that they have a fantastic record so far scoring 17 goals and conceding none during match play.
The North of England finals were due to be played on Tuesday at Weetwood playing fields at Leeds University
