GEORGINA Hirst of Flamborough Head Golf Club became one of eight talented youngsters to be crowned 2012 Champions of England Golf’s National Skills Challenge.
Coached at Flamborough by Ivan Oliver, she qualified for the event at Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire by finishing in the top three in her age group in the regional finals.
The National Skills Challenge is a series of 10 activities which aim to improve junior golf and make practicing more fun.
It covered five golfing disciplines – putting, chipping , pitching, bunker play and full swing – with two challenges in each category.
Hirst was competing in the Tour 12 to 14 years and was up against golfers with much lower handicaps than her current 14.
However she got off to an excellent early start with a 10-point lead after the bunker play and pitching challenges.
But her full swing and lack of focus on her putting reduced her lead to just five points.
Her final challenge was chipping, something she has always done well, and if to emphasise the point she chipped her first shot into the hole for an extra two bonus points to finish with 32 points, seven points clear of her nearest competitor.
