Flying start to life in new league sees Brid side top for Christmas

Bridlington-based badminton team Robbos Flyers are in top spot at Christmas in their first season in the Driffield League.

They have beaten teams from Beverley, Driffield, South Cave and Bridlington rivals BBC to remain unbeaten, having moved from the Scarborough League where they were champions for the past two years.

Captain Paul Robinson said: “We wanted a new challenge.

“The Scarborough League standard is not as good as it was in previous years. The Driffield League is a good standard so it’s good for our team to get better games.”

In the Manchester League Division One in Bridlington, champions Priory A beat their B team without too much trouble. Priory B did give their all with good performances from Craig Cockerill and Albert Peroche but the leaders were nstoppable and won 18-0.

Northcliffe B against BBC A was an intense and heated encounters, which saw BBC come out on top 13-8.

There was also some good badminton played, however, and the best game saw Ashley Holt and Mike Lee beat Stu Sanders and Andy McKie 18-21 21-17 21-18.

In Division Two, Acorn B turned the form book upside down as the bottom club beat Northcliffe C 11-10.

Abi Brunton was their star performer and she teamed up with Steve Buck to beat James Grantley and Sue Robson 21-14 17-21 22-20 before Derek Ward and Jill Crawford beat Derek Sims and Liz Boyton 21-17 21-16 to settle the result.
