An action-packed few months of national sporting events in Bridlington has kicked off this week with pool’s EBA European Blackball Championships.

Over 700 of Europe’s top blackball players from 10 different countries will enjoy the prestigious competition which has been held in Bridlington for almost 15 years.

The championship is one of the most highly regarded and eagerly anticipated on the blackball circuit and includes events for seniors, juniors, youths and people with learning difficulties.

Bridlington players Dug McCall and Jonny Lincoln are representing England B1 and the team have won their first four games. Another local Paul Stroud won five games out of five in one of his England Seniors B2 matches on Tuesday.

McCall said: “It was all going OK for me until Tuesday afternoon. And Jonny had bad luck on Monday when opponents cleared up four times without him having a shot.”

EY Events, which has helped to organise the pool tournament, is preparing for four months of top-class sporting competitions in Bridlington, with the annual Easter Hockey Festival, Crown Green Masters Bowls, Bridlington Golf Festival, UK Windsurfing Championship and the inaugural UK Open FootGolf Championship following on from the pool.

These events, along with the Northern Operatic and Dramatic Association Weekend, Elvis International Masters Weekender and massively popular Northern Soul Weekender, will attract over 7,000 visitors to the ‘Resort for Sport’, creating up to 18,000 bed nights and generating in excess of £2m for the Bridlington economy.

Paul Roggeman from EY Events said; “Our events over the next couple of months are a huge boost to the area at this time of year and an ideal start to the summer season for a lot of Bridlington businesses.”
