THE FREE Press has teamed up with Flamborough Head Golf Club to launch a new competition open to all players.
The first Bridlington Free Press Open will take place on Saturday, July 21. It will be played over 18 holes, as a stroke play medal format, with prizes for the top 10 players.
Free Press sports editor John Edwards said: “I hope this will be a welcome addition to the area’s golfing calendar and will attract plenty of local players.
“It has been scheduled for the main summer tourist season, so hopefully there will be interest from further afield too, with golfers taking up the chance to play in the Open and enjoy a short break on the coast.
“Flamborough Head is a challenging course at the best of times, so fingers crossed now for good weather.”
Chris Feast, competition secretary at Flamborough Head GC, added; “A true test of anyone’s golf and handicap is to compete in an Open Individual Medal where you are playing against golfers with equal or better handicaps from other clubs and areas.
“Flamborough Head already runs one individual medal competition the Flaneburg Masters, which is often oversubscribed each September, with many asking for a similar event earlier in the year.
“To meet this need the Bridlington Free Press has kindly agreed to sponsor a new competition which could soon become a classic golfing open.”
Proceeds from the day will go to the Free Press 150 Fund, which will give out small grants to sports clubs and individuals in Bridlington and the surrounding villages, and the Flamborough club’s junior section.
