Bridlington RUFC welcome Roundhegians to Dukes Park in the Yorkshire Shield on Saturday, wary of being on the wrong end of a cup upset.

The Leeds side are in Yorkshire Two these days, but Bridlington’s director of rugby Rich Girking has happy memories of facing them during his playing days.

“They were a team you had to beat if you wanted to prove yourselves.

“Roundhegians is a great Yorkshire club who always had good footballing sides.

“They will come here with everything on their side, because everyone expects them to lose, so there is no pressure.

“We will have to shape ourselves and if we take them lightly, we will lose.

“We know the winners get a home tie in the next round, and after that you are into the later stages of the competition so there is an incentive there.”

Girking expects to have a full strength squad to choose from.

“I’m looking forward to seeing our new players in a competitive match for the first time and looking forward to seeing how our fitness has progressed,” he added.

Kick off is at 3pm. Bridlington’s first Yorkshire One league match is the following Saturday, at home to Middlesbrough.
