ON SUNDAY, six members of Bridlington Road Runners took part in the Yorkshireman Marathon, a challenging 26.2 mile off-road race.

Starting in Haworth, the hilly course took in the Ogden Reservoir, the Hewenden Viaduct and the highest point in West Yorkshire, as well as miles of open moorland and spectacular scenery.

Runners were encouraged to take part in pairs and carry emergency rations and maps for this difficult to navigate course.

In spite of strong winds, conditions were good and Peter Gulc and Marc Corner made an excellent start, remaining in first place in the pairs until the 16th mile, where a wrong turn resulted in a setback and extra miles added.

Despite this they finished a respectable ninth position overall in 4 hours 32 minutes.

All finishers received commemorative T-shirts as well as hot food and refreshments.

The event was organised by Keighley & Craven AC and the Bridlington runners hope to return to this well-run race next year.
