Bridlington lost 10-6 at Yorkshire One leaders Doncaster Phoenix, but director of rugby Rich Girking was pleased with the vast improvement from last week’s home defeat to Heath.
Girking told the Free Press: “The lads all realised they had let themselves down the week before and they played well.
“We let Doncaster get an early try but after that there was nothing between the two teams.
“We had trained much better on Thursday and had a lot of people down to the session. We had a good old tussle and it set us up nicely for the game.
“The intensity carried forward into the game and we played with a lot of pace, which is how we like to play the game.
“The defending was absolutely fantastic and hardly any tackles were missed all game.
“We carried the ball well and gave them a right old fright. They were unbeaten, and although they have not really thrashed many teams, we knew we would have to play well to get anything out of the game.
“We took the game to them and in midfield Jack Arthur, Jamie Martin and Ryan Girking hammered them with some tackles which were uncompromising, to say the least.
“After the game, we said that getting a bonus point here means nothing if we play against Hullensians next week, the same way we did against Heath.
“We have to get a consistency going, and not play well against the top teams, and poorly against the poor teams.
“Hullensians are below us in the league and we need to climb away from the bottom four. Saturday was a much better performance but we have to remember we still lost the game.”
