Borough Bowling Club Singles Merit

Fine, sunny weather prompted 63 players to enter the Borough BC singles merit competition at the Manor Road green and resulted in some superb play.

Surprisingly, only one Borough-based player reached the quarter-finals stage – Nigel Trotter.

The event was sponsored by Gold River Chinese Restaurant and Take Away in Filey.

The event was run by Terry Summersgill and prizes were presented by Borough president Mary Maltby.

In the quarter-finals Peter van de Gevel (Dukes Park) beat clubmate John Lawton 21-14, Tommy Silcock (Barnsley) beat Kenny Wale (Whitby) 21-15, Derrick Swift (North Cliff) beat Ron Marshall (Dukes Park) 21-13 and Nigel Trotter beat Alan Landers (Whitby) 21-13.

Semi-final play saw Van de Gevel win through 21-13 against Silcock while Swift won through 21-14 against Trotter.

An exciting final could have gone either way but Van de Gevel snatched it 21-20 against Swift.
