ALEX Belt got a lucky break after damaging his driver on his first hole in the PGA North Region Mansell Finishes Winter Series at Royal Liverpool.
The 27-year-old Europro Tour player started his round on the 18th and was able to stroll back to his car to pick up a replacement club which belonged to a friend.
“I would have struggled if I’d teed off from a long distance away,” he said. “I only had a three wood which would not have done the job as well, especially against the strong wind.”
Bridlington-based Belt, who represents the De Vere Club, picked up seven birdies but his one-under-par 71 proved how tough the links played.
He added: “That was my last event of the season so it’s great to finish on a high. It’s also made up for some of the disappointment of finishing 10th in the Europro Tour Championship at Woburn last week.”
John Wells, from Cherry Burton, was second, a shot back.
