Former Scarborough batsman has been picked in England’s Ashes squad ahead of next Wednesday’s opener at Cardiff’s Swalec Stadium.

As expected, the Yorkshire man takes his place in the 13-man squad and he is joined by fellow Tykes Joe Root, Gary Ballance and leg-spinner Adil Rashid.

Alastair Cook’s men are in Benidorm putting in their final preparations as they prepare to try and wrestle the Urn back from the visitors after their 5-0 drubbing Down Under last time around.

Lyth struggled with the bat at North Marine Road when he was handed a second team outing by coach Jason Gillespie in a bid to get some time in the middle, but he will head into the series in confident fashion after hitting his maiden Test century against New Zealand at Headingley at Headingley in May.

Full squad: Cook, Ali, Anderson, Ballance, Bell, Broad, Buttler, Finn, Lyth, Rashid, Root, Stokes, Wood
