G-reat effort
THREE Bridlington Cycling Club members were on the start line for the Big G sportive on July 17, a timed, long distance cycling challenge around the Yorkshire Wolds, starting from Beverley and promoted by Hull Thursday Road Club.
Ian Hoad and Mick Brown opted for the full 160 kilometre route with 2,600 metres of climbing and Trish Watson chose the 100 km route for her first ever sportive.
An early start in sunshine saw the miles spin by with time to enjoy the wonderful scenery.
From Beverley the route headed north to South Dalton, North Dalton, Huggate, Wetwang, Sledmere then with the routes splitting Hoad and Brown continued up the hard climb to Wharram Percy and Watsonheaded back via Thixendale and a welcome feed station.
She realised she was on schedule to beat four hours 15 minutes and so achieve the gold standard set for the route.
An all out effort was made but slowed by the rain, wind and tiredness, the finish back in Beverley was reached in four hours 15 minutes four seconds – four seconds outside the gold limit!
Meanwhile Brown completed the 160km in six hours 20 minutes and Hoad in seven hours one minute, despite a puncture and giving assistance to another rider, both achieving silver standard.
All agreed it had been a great challenge and a wonderful ride.
